Parkinson says the 31-year-old will be a ‘massive asset’ for the Black Cats as they try and win promotion from League One at the first time of asking.
After taking charge in October, Parkinson urged Maguire to improve his fitness levels and prove he was worthy of an extension.

Parkinson is thrilled with his progress but says there could even be more to come.
With 11 goals in all competitions, Maguire finished the curtailed 2019/20 campaign as the club’s top scorer.
“I'm delighted we've got Chris here for another year,” Parkinson said.

“His fitness levels improved and he began to produce on a consistent basis, as we knew he could.
“But I still think he can get better and if we can get the best out of him, he will be a massive asset for us next season.”
Maguire is one of fourteen senior players currently under contract for next season, though the Black Cats remain hopeful that Tom Flanagan will agree to a new deal.
The defender reportedly has interest from Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic and newly-promoted Coventry City as he weighs up his next steps.
