Dion Sanderson could have played his last game for Sunderland after sustaining a back injury – and Black Cats supporters are gutted about the news.

The 21-year-old, who is on loan from Wolves, has been ruled out for around six weeks with the issue, meaning he is unlikely to feature in the League One play-offs.

Sanderson has impressed at the Stadium of Light this season and reportedly has several admirers who are keen to sign him.

“He’s a good personality and a great kid first and foremost, but the bit that most impressed me was how he stepped up in the leadership and communications skills areas, which shows he has a bright future.”

“It’s a big blow, but I don’t think about those types of things in that way.

Here’s how some Sunderland fans reacted to the news on social media.

@braddfearnleyy: Jokes aside it’s sad we’ve seen @SandowRs play his last game for Sunderland. One of the best defenders we’ve had for a very long time, good on the ball, reads the game well and became our leader when Bailey Wright was out injured.

@WhatTheFalkPod: Massive blow. Absolutely. Hopefully he'll join on another loan for next season.

@SunderlandafcI: League One football confirmed for next season

@mackem49000: Noooo speedy recovery mate. Thank you for your awesome contribution this season..please consider signing permanently we need quality players like you..take care

@CharlieHorner_: Huge issue for Sunderland. The most consistent and high-performing defender this season and, aside from his incredible RCB performances, has slotted in at both full-back roles throughout the campaign. He'll be sorely missed, but I will keenly follow his career.

@woodybp26: Let's hope this new head of recruitment can find a few 6ft plus centre halves who can stay fit for next season!

@aidanlowther: Will never see him in red and white ever again

@bamgboyeolu: Gutted wish you a speedy recovery @SandowRs

@davidboyle1985: Proper Sunderland that one of the most talented players to grace our squad, albeit on loan, in years and we never got to see him “live” All the best @SandowRs
