Neighbouring County Durham seemed to have a heavier coating of snow overnight and even Gateshead and Newcastle received a substantial sprinkling but once again, vast parts of Sunderland missed out.
On Thursday, January 21, you could drive a few miles from the centre of Sunderland to Houghton or Shiney Row where you’d be met with wintry weather.

However it is a much different story the closer that you head to the coast, with cameras on the A1290 Keir Hardie Way, A183 Whitburn Road and the A1018 Newcastle Road all showing sunny spells and no snow.
Earlier this month, the Met Office explained that because Sunderland is on the coast, the temperatures are slightly warmer and therefore Wearside tends not to experience as much snow as other areas of the North East.
Graham Madge, a spokesman for the Met Office, said: “The proximity to the coast and as a relatively low lying area does tend to be a degree or two warmer and that is sometimes all that is needed.”
