Arson investigation launched after car fire in busy Sunderland street

Emergency services were called shortly before 9.15pm on Monday, August 24, to reports of a car on fire in Leechmere Road, Sunderland.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and an investigation into the incident has been launched – with officers treating it as a suspected arson attack.

Hide AdA Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished. An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the fire, which is currently being treated as suspected arson.

A large number of calls were made to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service and one crew from Farringdon Community Fire Station attended at 9.10pm.
