When you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you. That’s what the song says but do you have the confidence to dazzle and flash your smile everywhere?

You may be conscious that your teeth need a little TLC but you might also be wary of visiting a dentist to help get that smile back in tip-top shape – let alone having a health check on your teeth and gums. But there is no need.

The innovative cleaning process used by City Dental EMS Airflow

All that off-putting noise and scraping, as the hygienist starts to remove the telltale signs of wear and tear, can be a thing of the past with an innovative cleaning process used by the team at Sunderland’s City Dental clinic.

City Dental uses the Airflow teeth cleaning process which uses a combination of air, water, and fine powder to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth.

Airflow cleaning – unlike conventional methods which rely on scraping and polishing – uses a controlled stream of compressed air and water mixed with fine particles of either sodium bicarbonate or glycine powder to dislodge and remove debris from the tooth surface.

It means the team at City Dental’s Dovedale Road base can put a confident smile back on your face … and you don’t have to put up with the traditional dental cleaning techniques, such as scaling and polishing.

The process is a breath of fresh air

Mel Flinders a Hygienist at City Dental with 32 years’ experience says: “While these traditional methods are effective to a certain extent, they have limitations in terms of efficiency and patient comfort.

“Scaling, for instance, involves the manual removal of plaque and tartar using handheld instruments, which can be uncomfortable and time-consuming.

“Polishing, on the other hand, aims to smoothen the tooth surface using a rotating rubber cup and abrasive paste, but it may not effectively address deep-seated stains.”

The EMS Airflow technique literally seems like a spa for the teeth.

Your teeth will feel smooth and refreshed

The Airflow process begins with a thorough check of someone’s oral health in case there are any areas of concern.

Then the hygienist begins the cleaning process by disclosing the biofilm this highlights the areas of plaque then the specialised Airflow device is equipped with a handpiece and an Airflow nozzle which moves over the teeth, targeting areas of plaque, tartar, and staining. A pressurised stream of air and water, combined with the fine powder, dislodges and removes debris without causing damage to the tooth enamel.

And a bonus is that the abrasive action of the powder helps to polish the teeth, leaving them feeling smooth and refreshed.

The Airflow cleaning is gentle on the teeth and gums, minimising patient discomfort, and the absence of scraping and grinding sensations makes it particularly suitable for people with sensitive teeth. The water is at an ambient temperature of 40 degrees so it is extremely comfortable.

Now that’s something to smile about!
