Man, 21, dies after being hit by car on the A690 in early hours of the morning

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a car on the A690 early today.

Police were called to a report of a collision involving a Vauxhall Antara car on a stretch of the eastbound carriageway between Gilesgate roundabout and Belmont junction, at about 2.25am this morning, Thursday, January 23.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: “We are sorry to report that a 21-year-old man involved in a road traffic collision on the A690 in the early hours of this morning has died.

“His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

The 40-year-old driver of the Vauxhall Antara was uninjured.

The road was closed for several hours.
