Gus Poyet’s men delivered a penalty shoot-out victory at Old Trafford to seal their first trip to the new Wembley, with a raft of fans favourites packed in the squad.
But where are they now? Scroll down and click through the pages to see where the Black Cats’ squad from that memorable evening are now:
1. GK: Vito Mannone
The penalty hero at Old Trafford, Mannone enjoyed a fine spell at the Stadium of Light before departing in 2017. He then joined Reading and has since gone on to join Minnesota United in the MLS on a year-long loan - but rejected a permanent move Stateside, leaving his long-term future uncertain. 2. RB: Phil Bardsley
Who could forget Bardlsey’s, erm, stunning strike in the North West. He remains in the Premier League with Burnley, but is struggling for regular game time at Turf Moor. Photo: Clive Mason
3. CB: John O’Shea
A key figure at the back during Sunderland’s Premier League era, O’Shea left the club following their relegation to League One and joined Reading. He subsequently retired, and is now on the coaching staff at the Madjeski Stadium. Photo: Clive Mason
4. CB: Wes Brown
From Wearside to India via Blackburn - Brown certainly enjoyed an interesting end to his playing career. After leaving Sunderland in 2016, the former Manchester United man joined Blackburn, before heading to Indian Super League side Kerala Blasters a year later. He spent a year with the Blasters, but hasn’t played since. Photo: Clive Mason
