Roy Keane’s side came from 2-1 down to claim a vital triumph which put one foot back in the Premier League - thanks in part to THAT famous Carlos Edwards strike.
So where are the heroes of that season now? We take a look at what happened to the memorable side:
1. GK: DARREN WARD
Ward spent three years at the Stadium of Light, but after helping the Black Cats to promotion fell down the pecking order. He subsequently retired and headed into coaching, and is now goalkeeper coach at Sheffield United. Photo: Matthew Lewis
2. DEF: DANNY SIMPSON
Having signed on loan for the second half of the campaign, Simpson became a key man in Roy Keane’s side. After a nomadic career, he has now found himself at Huddersfield Town - whom he joined at the beginning of the campaign. Photo: Christopher Lee
3. DEF: DANNY COLLINS
For Brazil he should play! The defender remains a fan favourite on Wearside and, since calling time on his playing career in 2019, has begun to pursue a career in the media - regularly appearing on BBC Radio Newcastle. Photo: Paul Gilham
4. DEF: JONNY EVANS
An inspired loan signing, Evans went on to spend a further campaign with Sunderland after helping the side to promotion. He’s now one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League and a regular for Leicester City. Photo: Shaun Botterill
