The Black Cats’ chief was once again in the stands as Elliott Dickman’s side ran out 2-1 winners courtesy of goals from Ruben Sammut and Cole Kiernan.
But who shone for the second string? Scroll down and click through the pages to see how we rated the individual displays on show at Eppleton CW as Sunderland claim the three points:
1. Nathan Harker
Little he could do about the opener, which was a freak goal to say the least. Dealt well with what was thrown at him, but his distribution was questionable at times. 7 Photo: Getty Images
2. Ryan Leonard
Steady on the right flank, Leonard got forward well but didn't offer too much in terms of deliveries into the box. 6 Photo: Nick Taylor/Liverpool FC
3. Andrias Edmundsson
Tidy enough at the back, but didn't look too comfortable playing out. 6 Photo: Nick Taylor/Liverpool FC
4. Ruben Sammut
An excellent finish for Sunderland's leveller, and Sammut added some much needed bite to the engine room with a number of timely interceptions. 8 Photo: FRANK REID
