Matthews, who left Bolton earlier this summer, put pen to paper on a one-year deal at the Stadium of Light on Friday evening – ending Phil Parkinson’s long search for a new goalkeeper following the departure of Jon McLaughlin.

They could be joined in the squad by youngsters Jake Hackett, Dan Neil, Brandon Taylor and Anthony Patterson – all of whom have been training with the first-team in recent weeks.
Sunderland have no other known injury concerns ahead of the game, with Parkinson likely to hand game time to as many players as possible.
