Crowds return to Sunderland city centre and seafront as weekend nears

A mixture of good weather, the oncoming weekend and the Government’s decision to let people make car journeys for exercise and relaxation appear to have prompted an increase in the amount of people enjoying the outdoors.
While there are no official estimates for pedestrian numbers on Friday, Sunderland City Council has confirmed a noticeable rise in the vehicle movements in the city centre since the start of the month.

Hide AdThey are now more than half what they were prior to the lockdown on March 23 after initially dropping by around two-thirds during the first full week after the initial restrictions were introduced.
Vehicles also queued to park at Herrington Country Park on Thursday after the lockdown relaxation.
The council is still urging people to still consider whether their vehicle journeys are necessary.
