A man from Black Colliery has been sentenced to prison following a burglary at an Aldi supermarket in Peterlee.

Michael Smith, aged 40 from Blackhall Colliery, appeared before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on Monday, March 29 where he was handed a 28-week custodial sentence for a burglary at an Aldi supermarket.

It is reported that Smith broke into the Aldi store on Yoden Way in December and once inside, removed several bottles of alcohol from the supermarket before making off from the scene on a bike.

Detective Constable Anna Pittam, from Durham City CID said: "The offender has been at large for quite some time but was located by eagle eyed response officers last month.

As well as the custodial sentence, magistrates also ordered Smith to pay compensation for the offence.
