Sunderland's weekly rate of new coronavirus cases rises slightly

Figures released by Public Health England on Monday, October 19, show an increase from 871 new cases in the week ending October 8 to 877 new cases by the week ending October 15.
The rolling rate, expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people, increased over the same period from 313.6 to 315.8.

Hide AdThe figures follow a caution-filled announcement by Health Secretary Matt Hancock that there were “early signs” that local restrictions in the North East were starting to work.
Some rolling rates elsewhere in the North East, including South Tyneside and Newcastle, have started to fall.
The figure are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).
Data for the most recent four days (October 16-19) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.
